What to do for Heat Exhaustion

1. Get the person out of the sun!
2. You must get the victim cooled down and they need liquids!
3. Loosen or remove clothing, especially anything tight,
4. Cool victim with water, fan the person to help cool them down.
5. Use a cool washcloth or other damp material as a cold compress. The head & neck area, the armpits or groin are good places for the cold compress.
6. Do NOT use an alcohol rub.
7. Do NOT give any medication to lower fever--it will not be effective and may cause further harm.
8. Give victim electrolyte beverages like Gatorade to sip or use slightly salted water (1 tsp. per quart) 1/2 cup every 15 minutes.
9. Do NOT give any liquids containing alcohol or caffeine as these may interfere with the body's ability to regulate internal temperature and caffeine will actually cause a body to loose liquid.
10. If the victims' condition does not improve or worsens seek medical attention immediately.

The CAUSE of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion starts with the accumulation of large quantities of blood in the skin of the body. This is an attempt to increase the body’s cooling efficiency.
Heat exhaustion is usually due to hotter temperature conditions than the individual is used to. There is a loss of circulating blood volume which decreases the blood supply to the brain and can cause fainting. While this isn't as serious as heat stroke, the individual should be closely monitored.
